The Why

The Sandbox is a place for me to play with ideas. These are unfinished projects that I'd like to finish, but haven't had the time, motivation, resources, or whatever excuse I choose for that day. I'm posting them, even though unfinished, to bounce ideas off the web population. That, and to motivate me to keep working on them.

Titles and details are tentative, like I said: these projects are unfinished. Some of these projects are further along than others and are on their own page.

O-----------------------------------------------------O

This is the table setup. Here, you see Player A and
Player B seated opposite each other.

The setting is 2 players pitted against each other. Each is in charge of their dimension. Each can also affect their opponent's dimension by playing certain cards. There are heroes, problems, and solutions ("Ah-hah!" cards).

Each has a "Success Bar". This is a binary-encoded (counts 0 to 15) meter. Every time a "Hero" successfully solves a problem, they make the listed "success flip" to increase their "Success Bar". When they flip all the counters (i.e. when there score is 15), their dimension crosses the "Dimensional Barrier", the universe implodes, and they win.

The players can play "Problem" cards to trip up their opponent's characters. The opponent can then play an "Ah-Hah!" card to counter and defeat the "Problem". Depending on whose succeeds, the winner of the conflict flips a number of "success flips" as listed by the "Problem" card.

    ^--Episode number ^--Don't know, but it's a
                                           good spot for something

This is an example of a card. Six or so will fit on a standard
piece of paper, depending on the size of the paper and the size of
the font you use. You can print them off if you want to.

As for the contents of the cards, I haven't quite worked out all the details yet, but this is what I have so far. The title is arbitrary, really. The cost how many flips the card requires to play. That way, if you play a card to help you win a conflict, it'll cost points depending on how much it'll help. The type of card is next, this one is "Ah-hah!", which means it's used to solve a problem, given to you by your opponent. The description tells you what the card does and what special conditions apply. The number on the bottom left is the episode number it came from and is linked to the episode. The other thing... is... well, it isn't really anything, but it's a decent spot to put something. I just haven't figured out what.

There are also "Hero" and "Villain" cards. These are the ones that must solve (or complicate) the Problems. Heroes have certain attributes that make them better versus certain problems, as well as vulnerabilities. Villains basically make the Hero's job more difficult.

ASCII Movie

or... "Stuck in the MUD"

A joint ASCII Movie was discussed on a newsgroup called alt.ascii-art.animation. There was some interest, but the project was pushed to the back burner. I figure I'll work on it now and then, and if anyone has any suggestions/interest, they can just let me know.

Here's what I have so far. I had origionally wanted to piggyback off existing art and plots (like Star Wars or Matrix), like Simon Jansen's asciimation of Star Wars: Episode IV. However, I agree with Osfameron's comments about this being a new production, requiring new art and ideas. (Osfameron has an animated comic called Chickenman.)

This is an early sketch of one of the first scenes. This is him in the airport, writing in his blog with his laptop. I figure I'll open the movie with the blog entry, so the audience can see what kind of fantasy world he already lives in. Once on the plane, he'll hook up the laptop to an inflight phone to connect to a MUD. That's when lightning strikes the plane and sends him into the MUD (believable, eh?).

This project will doubtless be done primarily with JavE and its animation editor. Markus Gebhard, JavE's creator, has been very responsive to editor suggestions and requests for support. JavE's files, .jmov, are very easy to work with, too, and combining several different files should be fairly simple.

The basic plot I'm working with right now, is of a procrastinating, unmotivated blogger who gets trapped in a MUD, goes through some trials and tribulations, and is a better person for it. I like the "fish out of water, fish takes over the world" stories... one of my favorite books is Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court.

There was a discussion on alt.ascii-art recently about an ASCII-Art intensive MUD. I figure I'll draw some scenes now and then, post them to that forum, and later reuse them in the MUD film. Check out the castles page for MUD pics.
